Tip: Taxes and Unemployment Benefits

If you are one of those who has no job and is fortunate enough to still have unemployment benefits, you have the option to have 10% of your check withheld for tax purposes.

Given the state of the job market, it’s probably still a safe bet that you will be looking for a job for some time.  Even though the unemployment checks don’t cover everything, it’s probably a good idea to opt for the withholding.  If you are still dirt poor when tax time rolls around, even the taxes on those unemployment checks can add up and sting a bit.  Remember, now that you’re unemployed, your economy is on a totally different scale and new rules will apply.
